Ice pack is all you can do except maybe an Ace bandage to restrict movement
This may help

If its from an injury, try R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression, elevation) If it doesn’t get better after a few days, its kind of avoidable - you will have to see a doctor to make sure you didn’t injure it too badly.

Try putting ice on it and then compresion. Put a bandage tight around it.
Lay your feet up and rest!!!

extra strength tylenol or even better Advil, since it is an analgesic.

if your health is worth taking care of and you want to live a good long life you will have to see the doctor insurance or not.

Try a few things and see how you feel:
1.) Keep your ankle elevated - this will alleviate any current swelling, and prevent further swelling
2.) Ice it for 20 minutes at a time each hour. (After a day or so, you can do it every other hour, or every 3 hours if you want. After a few days try some heat.)
3.) Wrap it in an ace bandage if you have one handy
4.) Tylenol will help with any pain you have
5.) REST - stay off of your ankle as much as possible. I know it’s hard being that it’s an ankle, but try.
If it doesn’t start improving you are going to have to see a doctor to see what the cause of your discomfort is, and how to take care of it.
Hope this helps.

You don’t say but I’m assuming you’ve already used the standard remedies for muscle/joint strain including “RICE” and over-the-counter pain relievers. You also don’t describe how or when your ankle became painful which limits my answer. Unfortunately, if your ankle pain does not improve significantly in 2-3 days you will have go to a physician because sever pain which doesn’t go away may be a symptom of a serious problem. If you think you can’t afford to see a physician now, think of how much you can’t afford to be disabled for the rest of your life. Get well soon.
